As fall arrives at Lake Washington High School, the excitement for a new football season is palpable. I recently had the chance to chat with Head Coach Andy Arena, a dedicated figure in our football community for over a decade. His passion for the sport and commitment to developing young athletes truly stands out.
Coach Arena believes in the unique nature of football. Unlike sports that cater to specific athlete types, football welcomes a diverse range of participants—fostering a culture where boys from various backgrounds can come together. This spirit of inclusivity is what keeps him involved in football long after his own playing days.
His coaching philosophy, shaped by a challenging experience during his senior year, emphasizes creating positive, memorable experiences for players. Coach Arena wants his athletes to enjoy the game and learn valuable life skills that extend beyond high school. Winning is important, but ensuring that players have a rewarding and joyful experience is paramount.
A key part of Coach Arena's program is how he structures the year around goal-setting. He holds individual meetings with players to set objectives and runs an offseason point system where they earn points for activities like weightlifting and community service. This approach encourages accountability and fosters a sense of unity among the team.
Reflecting on his favorite memories at Lake Washington, Coach Arena pointed out the perseverance he’s witnessed. He shared a story about a season that began poorly; the team rallied to achieve an inspiring comeback, demonstrating the essence of teamwork and resilience.
Community involvement is crucial for supporting the football program. Coach Arena encourages families to get young kids involved in youth football and highlights the significance of the booster club in helping meet financial needs. With costs upwards of $1,200 per player, support through game attendance and donations plays a vital role in the program's success.
Nurturing young athletes extends beyond the field and requires a collaborative effort from families, schools, and the community. If you’re interested in supporting the Lake Washington football program, consider visiting KangFootball.com for ways to contribute.
