Today, we’re at the iconic Everest Park in Kirkland for a special event— the T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby. As young, talented players swing for the fences, we’re also here to celebrate the deep roots of baseball and softball in our community and look ahead to exciting upcoming events. With some of Kirkland’s community leaders and coaches sharing insights, it’s clear that the legacy of growing local talent runs strong from the fields to high school championships and onto international stages.
A Legacy Built on Dedication and Community
First, we’re thrilled to welcome back Derek Bingham, a two-time Washington State Coach of the Year and the esteemed head coach of Lake Washington High School’s baseball team. Derek recently led the Kangs to their third state championship in less than ten years— an incredible achievement that speaks to the strength of Kirkland’s youth sports programs.
“I’m really proud of the boys’ effort this weekend and all the hard work they’ve put into their high school careers,” Derek shares. Reflecting on their journey through the state tournament, he highlights how the team faced tough competition — beating top-seeded teams and overcoming early setbacks, like a five-run deficit in the championship game, to secure victory. Those experiences, he says, are memories that will last a lifetime for the players.
Connecting Youth Development to High School Success
Derek emphasizes the vital link between youth leagues and high school programs: “Any great high school team starts here — developing skills, passion, and community pride. The relationship between Kirkland American Little League and our high school teams is crucial for fostering future success.”
He describes the various ways in which his coaching staff works directly with youth players, including hosting spring break camps attended by dozens of future Kangs, and mentorship programs where high school players volunteer with Little League teams. These personal connections foster a “big brother, big sister” environment, inspiring young athletes to aim higher and stay engaged with the sport they love.
Supporting the Community and Future Champions
Today’s event, supporting the Home Run Derby, is just one example of Kirkland’s ongoing commitment to youth sports excellence. Derek looks forward to continued success, with aspirations for a fourth state title in 2026.
We also caught up with Brian Wulfestieg, president of Kirkland American Little League, who told us about the busy season ahead. After wrapping up their 2025 season, the league is gearing up for district and state tournaments, with a path that leads to the national stage in San Bernardino and Greenville, NC. The upcoming All-Star seasons promise more local excitement and community engagement.

Kirkland’s Global Stage: Hosting the Junior League Softball World Series
One of the crown jewels of Kirkland’s sports legacy is hosting the Junior League Softball World Series, now in its 25th year. This prestigious tournament, broadcast live on ESPN+, features the best 12- to 14-year-old softball players from around the world competing for international glory right here at Everest Park.
Ben Brittingham, a member of the tournament committee, shared how this event puts Kirkland on the global map: “This is one of only seven Little League World Series tournaments worldwide, and we’ve had Kirkland teams make the finals twice.” It’s a showcase of talent and international unity that often flies under the radar but makes a huge impact locally.
To celebrate this milestone, the league is hosting special events, including the inaugural “Cats & Dogs Celebrity Softball Game” on July 25 at Lee Johnson Field, and Hosted by The Barbershop icons Terry “T-Holla” Holloman and Marcus Trufant. Followed by the classic movie “A League of Their Own,” these community events offer a fun, free opportunity to connect with baseball and softball culture while building excitement for the tournament.
